Cherish Education, Participation, Outreach and Non-Professional Work
This work is joyous in terms of what an artist's role should be in society, but in purely selfish terms, it is an excellent way of honing your craft of Making It Better™, because often these projects take quite a bit of Making Better, so there's no shortage of stuff to work on in rehearsals.
Just to clarify what I mean by each of these terms, as they're all slightly different:
Education: professional arts organisations who run projects aimed at opening up their area of the arts to young people.
Participation: as above, but aimed at adults
Outreach: the two categories above can be grouped together into the umbrella term of 'outreach'
Non-Professional: amateur organisations for musicians who have jobs other than as musicians
All of these offer different flavours of experience, and all are very valuable. As mentioned previously, from a self-advancing perspective, doing Education and Participation projects is a good way of meeting people within the wider organisation. On top of this, I see it as the responsibility of all musicians to take their talents and share them with as many people as possible - to waft and spray the enjoyment of music-making as far and wide they can. To this end, I hope never to stop doing outreach projects.
